Photojournalism

Photojournalism is a form of journalism that uses images to depict a story, usually something going on in the current, rather then the past. There are many closely related photography genres such as documentary, celebrity, street, ect. but the timeliness, objectivity and narritive used in photojournalistic photographs are what make photojournalism unique.

Photojournalists and writers are both considered reporters. The main difference is obviously the photojournalist takes photos while the writer writes but there are other, just as signifigant differences such as how much equipment each must carry and how a photojournalist must make more rushed decisions when creating his/her work.

The first photojournalist was Carol Szathmari who took pictures of the Crimean War. Not many of his photographs survived. Photojournalism has come along way since Carol Szathmari. Since the 1970s photojournalism has been more and more accept in the art community and is now just as respected as fine art photography and other subcategories.

Photos

One

This photo was taken by Robert F. Sargent. I chose this photo because i believe it does a great job of telling the story of a battle in war. I think all elements are used how they should be.

Two

This photo was taken by Dorothea Lange. I chose this photo because of the emotion it invokes in me. Just by looking at the woman in the photo you can tell she is desperate and worried.

Three

This photo was taken by Mathew Brady. I chose it because i feel it depicts a time and feeling with the viewer. I like this photo because you can tell it is really old but can still see that something important must have been happening. You can tell it was taken in Washington and because of all the people watching the parade it must have been something of importance.
